Our Mission and goaL
Chewing Dirt is a journal dedicated to young writers, particularly to the voices of LGBTQ+, POC, and female youth, and is completely run by students. While remaining entirely inclusive of writers who do not fall into these categories, we strive to amplify the voices of those writers.
The name Chewing Dirt comes from the poem Perihelion: A History of Touch, written by Franny Choi, a queer, Korean-American writer. The poem is split into twelve parts, and our name comes from the third segment, entitled Worm Moon. While the poem itself is beautiful overall, this segment leaks with a specific vulnerability and intimacy. Our goal is to encourage not just the intrapersonal reflection and continuous growth alluded to all throughout Franny Choi’s poem (not just in this excerpt), but also to emphasize the importance of confrontation with ourselves. Let your seeds of discomfort grow through your writing, learn to embrace each part of your identity. Where in the world would you be without you?
