The theme for our second issue of Chewing Dirt is Growth.
Growth is a guarantee. It is something we can rely on, even in the worst circumstances. Growth is inevitable.
In times like these, when we are forced into isolation and self reflection, it is a little more clear when change and growth occurs. From little changes to big changes, everything adds up.
For this issue, we want to hear about growth, the mundane and the life changing. Write a story about a character who experiences something that leaves them changed forever, about their journey towards acceptance. Write about how your character realizes that maybe they aren't happy with who they are. How do they evolve into somebody who they love?
You can write a poem about the little things you realize are changing around you and your reaction to them. Is it positive or negative? Do you fight it? Do you let it happen? How long does it take for you to embrace the growth? How do you grow in response? Or you can write a poem about finding something new that you love. When did you realize that you have a passion for gardening? Explore the parallels between you and your plants, how did you grow with them?
You can write an essay to reflect on your growth in the past. When did you realize that you were different from who you were three years ago? What was your experience dying your hair for the first time? Was it a relief or did it feel like you were trying to be somebody you weren't? How did your growth affect your relationships with other people? Was it a relationship or friendship that helped you grow? Do you feel freed? Is there something holding you back from true growth?
We can not wait to read what you send us :)
