hourglass
Corrie Ferguson
Corrie Ferguson
i remember the day i grew too big
for the palms of your hands
we saw it coming
but i was an adrenaline junkie
looking for my fix,
so i ignored you
every time you said
“oof, you’re getting heavy.”
it felt faster with every spin
and i didn’t know that soon i would
never feel the thrill of the ride ever again.
because time is terrible
and runs away
without warning if we’re not careful.
no matter how much we want to run from the
hourglass
we always get stuck in the sand
now when i look at you,
i smile and say, “remember when?”
and with those two words you and i
get to time travel.
i may be too heavy
too old for your hands
but certainly not for your love.
and as long as we can look at each other
and understand one another without speaking,
we will always have those moments
when you and i were only just budding
into the flowers we are blooming into.
you might not be able to pick me up
and spin me around my own sun anymore
but i still feel the same warmth when you
hug me goodbye
and say,
“see you soon.”
for the palms of your hands
we saw it coming
but i was an adrenaline junkie
looking for my fix,
so i ignored you
every time you said
“oof, you’re getting heavy.”
it felt faster with every spin
and i didn’t know that soon i would
