The theme for our first issue of Chewing Dirt is NEW BEGINNINGS.
With the launch (and relaunch) of our website and our instagram, we are starting something very new, and very exciting. While not all of our issues will have a theme, any themes we do decide on will be very loose. You can choose to write based off of the theme, or you can choose not to. It is completely optional and open to interpretation.
While we all experience new things constantly, we don't often pause to reflect on our reaction. Take some time to do that when submitting to this issue.
You can write a short story about a character moving to a new town or a new school. What is it like for them to meet so many different people? What impact does the change in climate (social or natural) have on your character? Are they relieved to experience something new, or do they miss where they were before?
You can write a poem about a new relationship, romantic or platonic. What new things do they introduce you to? What feelings are you experiencing for the first time? What attracts you to them, what weird thing do you like about them? The tone they speak in? Their sense of humor?
You can write an essay of reflection on something you experienced for the first time in the past. What was it like to travel internationally for the first time? Do you remember the first time you tried a certain food? How did whatever happened to you change you in the long run? Did you notice you were changing while it was happening, or was it so gradual that you didn't notice until you looked back on it?
Whatever you write, write it well, and write it with care.
